My suggestion for watching the movie "Dream of Life" on October 19 might be more relative to a music club. I'm a fan of Patti Smith, and I think she has expressed important ideas and beliefs through her music. Therefore I'm more inclined to go the the screening of her movie, specially because she may be present as well. She's one of those very few special people in the current times. You know it, as soon as she starts talking or singing. I don't want to pass on the opportunity to be in the same room with her. But the question is if we have enough Patti Smith fans in this group? (As it was very well said by "Penny Lane" in the movie Almost Famous: " to be a fan, is to like a song so much that it hurts!!")

So, is there anyone else?
If not, I'll catch the movie by myself.

aw..I feel I am being challenged here! so I guess I have to educate myself about her so much that I can figure out if I am a fan or not.. well I guess I can do that. Will know soon..

;-)
I'm sure you're a true fan!

Leili it is actually a good idea to have a really secret music club too!!!! I like your idea!

Then how many arts have we covered? I think the 7 arts were ( I might be so wrong):
1- Dance
2- Music
3- Theater/drama
4-painting
5- sculpture
6- literature
7-architecture

and

8- Cinema

So we have covered literature and cinema so far, still 6 more to go :) we can combine "dance & music", and have something else for " painting, sculpture, architecture" or visual arts... Cool!

So far majority of people on the list said they like to watch Patti Smith's movie but we are still waiting for half the list to vote.

hahaha!
we are practically building an underground city for arts which may very well include everyone that we know on the ground ;-)

but sure, it may help to label them as 'secret'. This way, We may be able to keep the quality of the activities high by not having to cave into the more popular ones.

I am all in for any kind of underground city, public or secret specially if you are going to be the mayor! ;)

BTW, wasn't Cinema the 7th art? what was that show on tv called? "honare haftom" ?

Thanks Tara. On a serious note ...
I think Ricciotto Canudo, an Italian film theoretician, came up with the expression "seventh art" in his manifesto "Reflections on the Seventh Art".
The first six arts were first categorized by Hegel in his "Lectures on Aesthetics":

1- architecture
2- sculpture
3- painting
4- dance
5- music
6- poetry

So, basically theater/drama was not on their list.

Thanks for looking it up. I tried to search for the references before but could not find a definite list, since some of the lists had taken literature out. In Iran in the Art school we used to have this distinction of the medieval art disciplines but I guess it is something that is not being referred to here as much..

It was very interesting to me why this was the case. What if all the references to this distinction is derived from a translation of merely one source..
